Roy & the future

I'm gonna try and do my blog in English and Icelandic for now and see how it works. So beforehand I apologize for all spelling mistakes that may appear in my posts. If you have any feedback, comments or recommendations please don't hesitate and send it as a comment below or on @Olafur_Tomasson on twitter. :)

After a bad 2009/2010 season and everything that followed I thought to myself 'No, things can't get as bad next winter', but saddly it hasn't only been as bad as last season - it's been even worse!

There is no doubt that Rafa Benitez failed to deliver in his last season at the club and I accepted the decision that he had been let go - only if the next hiring would be improvement on Rafa. Why else would you want to change the manager in the first place?

Roy Hodgson came in, and truth be told he wasn't even on my top ten list of possible candidates for the job, but I had said to myself when watching Fulham trashing Man Utd few months earlier and playing decent football with good team spirit, 'I'd be interested to see how Roy would succeed with a bigger and better team than Fulham. If he can do all this with a medicore Fulham side then God knows what he could do with a team like Liverpool'. So when Roy was unveiled as the new manager of my beloved Liverpool F.C. I decided to give him a chance, after all he'd done remarkable things with Fulham and I was excited to see if he would be able to do what I had imagine he could do.

First few months he got me quite excited. Promised to steady the ship, play good 'pass-and-move' football and bring the good, old feel-good factor that was this club's trademark few years back. With his supposed good man-managment skills, experience and the wonder he'd done with Fulham, I maybe didn't expect Liverpool to be candidates for the Premier League title but I expected Liverpool to challenge for Champions League qualifacation.

Sadly everything I had expected and hoped for soon vanished. After just few games Liverpool had fallen into relegation battle, which it still hasn't completely been saved from yet and seem to have missed out ouf Champions League spot as well as the tittle race.

It didn't take a long time to realize that Roy didn't have what it takes to manage a big club like Liverpool. He'd done good things at Craven Cottage with little expectations and every success he'd get was always going to be some kind of bonus. At Anfield, where expectations are remarkably superior to those at Fulham, he has failed to deliver. Everything seems to be falling apart for him and it comes heavily down on the club where success and glory is the livingbread of the fans, the players and the club itself.

Roy seems to be a nice man who came here believing he had what it takes to make Liverpool great again and it's always sad to see someone you respect, I respected him while he was at Fulham, fail like he has done and been under a lot of pressure and has got some stick from the fans. I'm not saying the stick he's got isn't right; he has made bad signings for a lot of money, he's made poor judgments with the team, his tactics don't bring success nor entertainment to Anfield, his away record is terrible and he has said some stupid things in the media. Nevertheless I feel quite sorry for the guy, it's not admired situation he's in and he like anyone else who is in some way related to Liverpool F.C. should be treated with respect (Though maybe not El-Hadji Diouf!).

Now it's time for Roy to pack his bags and move on. It's the best solution for everyone. He's not living up the expectations of the Club and it's fans, and probably not even his own expectations. Liverpool seem to be to big for him to swallow and it's time for both parties to move on. But first, since Roy seems to be in charge of the FA Cup fixture on sunday, he should trash Man. Utd. at Old Trafford, leave the club with dignity and bring the smile back on the fans faces again.
